If you caught last week’s post on Esther Rose, you might’ve noticed it was a bit of a departure from my usual ramblings. I had what I thought was a brilliant idea—writing the piece in the style of Bridgerton (Netflix series). Naturally, I penned my post and then summoned ChatGPT to give it the full Regency treatment. Dawn, ever the voice of reason (as she is wont to be), pointed out that not everyone has watched Bridgerton, and the style and references might fly over a few heads. A fair point. Still, I maintain the novelty had its own charm. Or maybe it didn’t. TBD.
This week, we’re diving into the raw, raucous world of Blondshell.
Born Sabrina Teitelbaum in New York City and now based in Los Angeles, Blondshell is a rising force in the indie rock scene. She first gained attention under a different moniker—BAUM—exploring a more polished pop sound before shifting gears toward the gritty, emotionally charged alt-rock that now defines Blondshell. The pivot was a revelation.
Her influences span a fascinating range: from the bluesy grit of Janis Joplin and the soul of Amy Winehouse to the alt-rock angst of PJ Harvey, Liz Phair, and The Strokes. There’s even a touch of Madonna’s fearless self-expression and The National’s introspective brooding in there. It’s an eclectic cocktail that somehow works perfectly.
What makes Blondshell stand out isn’t just her sound—it’s her unflinching honesty. Her lyrics are deeply personal, often blunt, always raw. She writes about trauma, addiction, loneliness, and the messiness of being human, and does so with the kind of conviction that sticks with you. Her 2023 self-titled debut album received critical acclaim for its vulnerability and cathartic energy, channeling the kind of ’90s alt-rock nostalgia that feels both familiar and fresh. She has a new album, “If You Asked for a Picture” dropping May 2nd.
If you like your music served with self-reflection, a little distortion, and the occasional scream-into-the-void moment, Blondshell’s worth your time. She’s not just making music—she’s carving out a space where chaos and clarity coexist.
